KVAK: International Event in Barcelona

12/12/2024 | Training and counselling

In November we hosted a 4-day event in Barcelona, in the frame of the European project KVAK, alongside partner organizations from Slovenia, Italy and The Netherlands. In the lead up to the event we had been working on a guidebook which aims to outline good practices of working in the youth work field and networking.

Each day was dedicated to a separate aspect of how to create, facilitate and receive feedback and how to ensure that is done with a perspective including vulnerable groups. The diverse working backgrounds and interculturality of the participants allowed for interesting discussions and insightful input that will aid the project beyond this week.
Day one, we got to know each other with a speed dating energizer and then dove into the topic of “How to “talk” to young participants?” Simple, but most important – what is our role, how to set boundaries and in what ways to intervene.
Day two, we took a look at “Why equity matters?” by making use of case studies that we as youth workers may encounter in our daily work and how to navigate ethically challenging situations.
Day three, we took a deeper look into the significance of equity through learning scenarios and a co-lab session. As many of the participants have a debating background, we explored how the intricacies of that world can be applied in other contexts, too.
Day four was the main day we dedicated to working with “vulnerabilities and vulnerable groups.” In these sessions, we were able to dive into the importance of always integrating an inclusive approach in our planning, activities and feedback.
In the coming months the work on the guidebook will continue, as well as the preparation for the upcoming event that is meant to take place in Slovenia next year.
KVAK (Efficient, inclusive, engaging and constructive feedback in youth work) is a project of cooperation in the field of youth with the aim of increasing quality, innovation and recognition in youth work, a journey which we embarked on in February of 2024.
KVAK addresses 3 critical areas that are missing in youth worker training:

  • Effective and safe delivery of feedback;
  • care for vulnerable groups, and
  • appropriate attitudes towards participants.
